1. What is a .tech domain?
.tech is a generic domain extension introduced in 2015 and operated by Radix. It is commonly used by technology companies, startups, developers and technical projects.
2. Who can register a .tech domain?
Individuals, businesses and organisations worldwide can register an available .tech domain, subject to registry policies and applicable laws.
3. Do I need to own a technology company?
No. You do not need to own a technology company or hold a technical qualification. You can use .tech for a startup, developer portfolio, technology blog, community or personal project.
4. How much does a .tech domain cost? Is VAT included?
Check the pricing table for current registration, renewal and transfer charges. First-year promotional prices may differ from renewal prices. Premium names may have higher charges, including renewal charges. Review the order summary for applicable VAT or other taxes before payment.
5. How long can I register my .tech domain for?
.tech registrations support terms of 1 to 10 years. Select from the registration periods available at checkout. Renewals are subject to a maximum remaining registration term of 10 years.
6. Can I transfer my existing .tech domain to Gatehills?
Yes, provided the domain is eligible for transfer. Unlock it with your current registrar, obtain the authorisation or EPP code, and submit your transfer request. Applicable transfer locks and domain status restrictions must be cleared first.
7. Does a transfer include an additional year?
An eligible .tech transfer normally adds one year to the existing registration period. Exceptions can apply, including maximum registration-term limits and certain transfers following an auto-renewal.
8. Does .tech support internationalised domain names?
Yes. The registry supports internationalised domain names using approved language and script tables. Your chosen name must follow the applicable character rules. Check whether Gatehills supports registration of that name before ordering.
9. Are domain privacy and DNSSEC supported?
Yes. .tech supports domain privacy and DNSSEC. Privacy is subject to service terms, while DNSSEC requires compatible DNS hosting and correct configuration. Check activation options through Gatehills.
10. Can I connect my .tech domain to an existing website or project?
Yes. You can connect your domain to a compatible hosting service or website platform using the required DNS records. Custom-domain support, setup steps and any additional charges depend on your chosen provider.
11. When will my domain and website become active?
Your domain must first be successfully registered and configured with the correct DNS records. Website and email availability also depend on their service setup. DNS updates become visible as cached records expire, so timing varies.
12. Are hosting and email included?
Check the included-features section for the services provided with your registration. Email forwarding redirects messages to an existing address; it does not provide a hosted mailbox. Website hosting and mailbox services depend on the package you select.
13. What happens if I do not renew before expiry?
Your website and email may stop working. The registry’s auto-renew grace window is up to 45 days, but your registrar may apply a shorter renewal deadline. Following deletion, a 30-day redemption period normally allows restoration for an additional fee. A five-day pending-delete stage follows if the domain is not restored, during which recovery is unavailable.
