1. What is a .uk domain?
.uk is the country-code domain extension for the United Kingdom, managed by Nominet. It can be used for business websites, personal brands, online shops and other projects associated with a UK audience.
2. Who can register a .uk domain?
Individuals, businesses and organisations worldwide can register an available .uk domain, subject to Nominet’s rules and accurate registrant-data requirements.
3. Do I need to live in the UK or have a UK company?
No. UK residency or UK company registration is not required to register a standard .uk domain. You must provide accurate and verifiable registrant information.
4. What is the difference between .uk and .co.uk?
They are separate domain registrations within the UK namespace. A direct .uk address uses yourname.uk, while a .co.uk address uses yourname.co.uk. Registering one does not automatically register or include the other.
5. How much does a .uk domain cost? Is VAT included?
Registration, renewal and transfer charges are shown in the pricing section. Promotional rates may differ from standard registration prices. Review checkout for the selected term, applicable VAT or other taxes, and the final amount payable.
6. How long can I register or renew my .uk domain for?
Registration and renewal options range from 1–10 years, subject to Nominet’s maximum registration-term rules and the options offered by Gatehills.
7. Can I transfer my existing .uk domain to Gatehills?
Yes. Under the current process, a .uk registrar change uses the receiving registrar’s TAG, also called an IPS tag. Contact Gatehills for the correct TAG and account instructions, then ask your current registrar to arrange the change.
8. Do I need an EPP code to transfer a .uk domain?
Under the current .uk process, registrar changes normally use a TAG change rather than the EPP authorisation-code process used for many other extensions. Follow Gatehills’ current transfer instructions.
9. Does transferring a .uk domain add another year?
No. A registrar change alone does not extend the domain’s expiry date. If renewal is purchased or included separately, the expiry date changes according to that renewal.
10. Does .uk support internationalised domain names?
No. .uk registrations use permitted ASCII characters. Accented letters and other non-ASCII scripts are not supported.
11. Are privacy protection and DNSSEC supported?
Nominet generally withholds personal registration details from public lookup by default. Privacy or proxy services are subject to Nominet’s rules and registrar availability. DNSSEC is supported and requires correct configuration with a compatible DNS provider.
12. Can I connect my .uk domain to an existing website?
Yes. You can connect it to a compatible hosting service or website builder by updating its nameservers or DNS records. Your website provider may require a paid plan to connect a custom domain.
13. Are hosting and email included?
Check your order for website hosting and mailbox services. Email forwarding, where included, sends messages to an existing inbox and does not provide a separate email mailbox.
14. When will my domain become active?
Your domain can begin working after registration is completed and the required DNS records are configured. DNS changes may take time to appear everywhere because of caching and record TTL settings.
15. What happens if I do not renew before expiry?
Under the current registry lifecycle, the domain has an initial 30-day expiry grace period. It is then suspended but remains renewable until 90 days after expiry. Renewal is unavailable during the final five-day pending delete period, and the domain is released 95 days after expiry unless another registry process applies. Your registrar may set an earlier renewal deadline.
